The School Leaver Programme
The students in St John of God School Islandbridge have a very fun filled and exciting year ahead when they reach the School Leaver Class. This final year is a very special one, filled with new challenges and exciting activities. They achieve a lot of personal goals including travel training, work experience, preparing for their 18th birthdays and the highlight of the year, preparing for the Debs ball.
The students have the opportunity to work within very real work situations both in school and in the community, while being shadowed by staff. This is beneficial in many ways, not least in confidence building. It is wonderful to see the students progress from being understandably nervous and apprehensive in the beginning, to self assured by the end of the year. This year the students worked in The Hilton Hotel, The Patriots Pub, Ann's Bakery, Inchicore College of Education and on reception in the school.
During their final year in school, most of the students learn to travel independently, to and from town, using the bus and the luas. This helps them on their road to independence.
